ADMINISTRATIVE ACCOUNTABILITY

ADVOCATING FOR STUDENTS UNAPOLOGETICALLY

FAIR PARKING PRACTICES

Let’s be real: parking at Miami is a pain in the ass. The administration has incentives beyond our control that have made student efforts for parking reform fruitless in the past, but Madelyn and Aidan believe there has to be a better way. For students who pay for their own education, a Miami parking violation can be ruinous, and make our already pricy student experience that much more expensive for many people; not to mention our student workers, who can lose what amounts to a week’s pay over one ticket. For Madelyn and Aidan, whose combined parking-related debts could fund the GDP of a small nation, this is personal.

To be clear: candidates run on this promise year after year. Madelyn and Aidan are ready to fight on behalf of the student body to implement changes including a gradual ticketing system, free red passes for student workers and RAs, and free parking for COVID tests.

DINING DOLLAR FLEXIBILITY

One of the best parts of Miami’s meal plan system is the flexibility that declining balance dollars offer to be spent at a la carte locations like Pulley, Dividends, and our various markets. Our dining hall swipe system, however, depends on the fact that the vast majority of students do not use 100% of the swipes allotted to them, leaving vast amounts of money unused. Miami’s business model relies on this, which is unfair and unsustainable. Furthermore, students without money in declining balance are left with few after-hours options.

Madelyn and Aidan will fight for a more flexible dining system where swipes can be used at a la carte locations. In conjunction with this restructuring of the meal plan, M&A will work to create more administrative transparency when it comes to how much the average student is actually getting for what they are paying for.

SPECIALTY RECYCLING

President Crawford’s signing of the PCLC was certainly a major step for Miami in sustainability. As a Public Ivy, Miami sets an example for other universities across the United States. Now, it’s time to deliver on that promise.

Currently, plastic bags can be recycled at Walmart or Kroger. This creates a disadvantage for on campus residents who do not have access to transportation. Miami’s sustainability organizations are leaders in spearheading Miami’s sustainability initiatives. Madelyn and Aidan plan to collaborate with Green Orgs on campus to set up specialty recycling receptacles in Armstrong, Dining Halls and other high traffic areas across campus, a simple and easily implemented step that will make a measurable difference.
